Sambhal (UP): Samajwadi Party MP Shafiqur Rahman Barq on Thursday took strong exception to the Law Commission seeking fresh public opinion on a uniform civil code, and said it will only spread hatred in the country.

"Lok Sabha elections are round the corner, elections are also to be held in some states. These people (BJP) have no (issues) to talk about. They cannot say that they have done any work as they have only put the country in the fire of hatred," he told reporters.

"Making this law will not work, this will only create more hatred in the country," he said. Barq's remarks come in the wake of the Law Commission on Wednesday stating that it has decided to look at the need for a uniform civil code (UCC) afresh and seek the views of various stakeholders, including members of the public and religious organisations. He said people of different fraternities and religions live in the country, and they spend their lives according to their own religion.

No one has any problem today, only the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has a problem. The BJP's policy is one of spreading hatred among Hindus and Muslims because of which the secular nature of the country has been disturbed, the Samajwadi Party (SP) MP from Sambhal said.

Barq further alleged that the saffron party is spreading hatred among citizens. Asked about the recent cases of alleged involvement of Muslim youths in forced religious conversions, he said it reeked of propaganda.

"Elections are scheduled for 2024, they (BJP) are liars and doing this type of propaganda. They want to garner votes of our Hindu brothers through this," he added.
