New Delhi: Waking up to a thick blanket of fog bringing the visibility down to a bare minimum, Delhiites woke up to a chilly morning today.
The cold wave that has been sweeping through North India brought the minimum temperature in the National Capital Region to 5.6 degrees Celsius making it lesser than that of hill station Nainital which reported a minimum temperature of 7 degrees Celsius.
Reports of dense to extremely dense fog conditions have been coming from parts of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttarakhand. People driving on the streets of Delhi and NCR had to keep the fog lamps on and move slowly and extremely cautiously through the fog in order to avoid any mishaps.
Even the Indian Meteorological Department made a prediction for the extremely cold conditions in Delhi today. Furthermore, it released a bulletin at 3:30 pm yesterday which said “Cold Day/Severe Cold Day Conditions very likely in some parts over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and West Rajasthan and cold day conditions in isolated pockets over Uttarakhand on 26th and 27th December 2022”.
“Due to prevailing light wind and high moisture in lower tropospheric levels, dense to very dense fog is very likely to continue over some parts of Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and West Rajasthan during the next 48 hours” reported IMD.
Early in the morning, Delhi Airport Authorities sent an update, noting that although take-offs and landings are continuing, flights that are not outfitted for poor visibility operations may experience some delays. The officials also recommended the travellers contact their airline company if the flight schedule changed.
While Delhi’s air quality remains ‘very poor’, the weather department predicted that a Western disturbance will minimise fog and increase the amount of sunlight reaching the surface leading to a rise in temperature starting this Wednesday i.e., 28th December 2022.
