New Delhi: Along with announcement of Karnataka Assembly elections, the Election Commission Wednesday also released the schedule for by-elections in parliamentary and assembly constituencies.

Parliamentary constituency of Jalandhar in Punjab will go for polls on May 10. The counting of votes will take place on May 13.

The seat, which is at the heart of Punjab’s Doaba region, is reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC). It was earlier represented by Santokh Singh Chaudhary, a senior leader of the Congress party, who died of a heart attack during party leader Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in January this year.

Assembly constituencies of Jharsuguda (Odisha), Chhanbey and Suar (UP) & Sohiong (Meghalaya) will also vote on May 10. The votes polled in these constituencies will be counted on May 13.

Assembly elections in Karnataka will also be held on May 10 and the results will be declared on May 13, the Election Commission said.

Addressing a press conference here, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said the notification for the elections to the 224-member assembly will be issued on April 13 and the last date for filing nomination papers will be April 20.

Kumar said the nomination papers will be scrutinised on April 21 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations will be April 24.

Kumar said the elections have been scheduled on a Wednesday, and not on a Monday or Friday, to encourage greater participation of voters.

The ruling BJP and Congress have already launched spirited campaigns for the elections.
