After Tillu Tajpuriya’s murder, Tihar Jail authorities to seek Delhi Police’s help to segregate inmates of different gangs

New Delhi: A day after gangster Tillu Tajpuriya was stabbed to death inside the Tihar Jail, the Delhi Prisons Department on Wednesday said it will seek real time information from police about gangs operating outside so that their jailed members can be segregated to avoid such kind of incidents in future.

Tajpuriya was killed early Tuesday morning inside central jail number 8 and 9 allegedly by four members of the rival Gogi gang, who stabbed him "92 times" with improvised weapons.

The four attackers -- Deepak alias Titar, Yogesh alias Tunda, Rajesh, and Riyaz Khan -- lodged on the first floor of the prison, cut the iron grille installed there and used bed sheets to climb down to Tajpuriya's floor, according to police.

"We will coordinate with police and get the real time information about the operating gangs so that their members can be segregated in order to avoid such kind of incidents in future. It is a regular exercise and we will again approach the police,” an official of the prisons department said.

"The Public Works Department (PWD) conducts regular audit inside the jail premises about security structure where they locate the areas where improvement can be done," he added.

When any such incident happens inside the jail, the prison officials get real time data (regarding threat perception) about the operating gang members from police to avoid untoward incidents in the future, officials said.

An official said inmates generally make weapons after sharpening metal objects -- which are being mostly cut from exhaust fans, water coolers and mesh -- with the help of stones and tiles.

The officials said as many as 53 searches were conducted inside the jail in April during which 32 non-sharped and 22 sharped weapons were recovered.

The prison officials said Tuesday’s incident, from cutting the grilles to attacking Tajpuriya, took place within five minutes.

The response team reached and tried to intervene but the victim couldn't be saved. Four sharpened weapons were recovered from the spot, they added.

They officials said the four attackers have been shifted to another jail The central jail 8 and 9 has over 2,300 under trial prisoners, while the capacity of the jail is 1,200. It has 40 high security prisoners. There are three shifts for the jail staff and the security personal inside the jail.

There are around 60 Delhi Prisons staff members and security personnel present at a time in jail number 8 and 9. The jail has a total of 975 CCTV cameras, an official said.

He said the three of the four assailants came to the jail this year.

“Yogesh alias Tunda was lodged in jail in 2015. He was out for around 10 to 15 days and returned on January 6. He came to jail number 8 and 9 on March 30. Rajesh is lodged in jail since 2007. He also came to that jail on March 30.

"Deepak alias Titar is in jail since 2012. He came to jail number 8 and 9 on January 24. He was earlier punished by the jail authorities for misbehaving. While Riyaz is in jail since 2008. He was lodged in the jail, where the incident took place, in October last year," the official said.

Tajpuriya was lodged in Tihar Jail since 2016.
