New Delhi: The Republicans are increasingly realising that Donald Trump is fast becoming unelectable despite being a front-runner to get the party nomination to take on Joe Biden in 2024.

A New York jury has found that Trump sexually abused E. Jean Carroll in a department store dressing room in 1996. She has been awarded $5 million for battery and defamation. According to Carroll, Trump raped her in the department store and then defamed her while denying her claim. The jury held that Trump sexually abused her but charges of rape could be sustained. Trump is likely to appeal against the award but legal experts say he has a very slim chance of getting it reversed.

Carroll’s charges were civil in nature but Trump’s legal troubles are far from over.

A New York grand jury is probing a "hush money" payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels in 2016 and has indicted Trump with 34 counts of falsifying business records. A Georgian District Attorney's Office is investigating Trump and his conduct after the 2020 elections with a suspicion that he called the Georgian secretary of state to find a way to overturn the results. Then, a special counsel is probing Trump’s role in the January 6, 2021 attack on the capitol and mishandling of classified government documents.

But Trump is still living in the palace of falsehood.

Wednesday’s CNN Townhall gave a glimpse of what to expect during Trump’s campaign for the presidency in 2024.

He lied about the 2020 election results, presidential documents, impeachments and many other things. It seemed as of the CNN moderator Kaitlan Collins was sitting before a lie machine that needed to be fact-checked for every sentence that it uttered.

So what holds now for Trump and the Republican Party which is realising that with Trump on the ticket, it can forget about women voters, especially those with college degrees?

No doubt Trump remains popular among his supporters and leading the field of Republican candidates in the fray so far. Florida governor Ron DeSantis is about to declare his candidacy but he too is lagging behind Trump as of now despite being the most formidable opponent of the former president.

But this leads to a question - even if Trump remains a front-runner, can he still win the presidency in 2024 with criminal investigations looming large on the horizon?

And Republicans are fast noting that Trump is becoming unelectable.

If he is becoming unelectable then, what’s the point of having him on the ticket, that’s the question troubling the Republicans most. But still, no one, barring one or two exceptions, has come forward to take Trump head-on. The opponents of Trump don’t want to annoy his voter base by excessively criticising the ex-president in case they manage to win the nomination.

But even without nomination, can Trump be stopped from entering into the fray? His coffers are brimming with dollars and he has already launched the campaign. And as we know unpredictability is the second name of Trump, don’t be surprised he can be found fighting the election as an independent. Trump has always been a RINO, an acronym for Republican in Name Only. He is loyal only to his own well-being and as of now, it seems that he can keep prosecutors bit away if he remains in the fray for 2024. Republican or not is yet to be seen and decided.
