Monsoon showers drenched the capital city on the last day of June. The IMD predicted the arrival of the southwest monsoon in Delhi from June 30th. However, the IMD has yet to declare the arrival of the monsoon in the capital.

The onset and arrival of monsoon brought joy and relief for the Delhites from the scorching heat but also increases the risk of diseases, and infections, putting your health at risk.

Boost your Immunity

It’s very important to boost your immunity as most infections occur during the monsoon season. The excessive moisture in the atmosphere makes bodies prone to cough, cold, and fever.

Try home remedies, drink soup and warm food. Add garlic to your soup, and drink ginger or herbal tea as there are several health benefits. 

Make sure to drink clean water

The water gets contaminated during the monsoon and the chances of infections and stomach woes increase. Therefore, drink clean and safe drinking water.

The best way to stay safe is to drink water from the water filter of your home. Carrying a water bottle from home is a smart move.

In case you have forgotten to carry your bottle from home, rely on sealed or packaged drinking water. Another safe option is to boil water before drinking.

It’s very important to keep hydrating yourself during the monsoon because the body tends to sweat more in this weather due to extreme humidity, leading to overheating, exhaustion, and putting your health in danger.

Carry Umbrella and Raincoats

During the monsoon period, the weather is very unpredictable and it can rain anytime. Hence, always carry an umbrella or raincoat or both whenever you step out of your house. Keeping yourself dry and fresh in this weather is the best way to stay healthy and avoid diseases like cold, cough, flu, and fever.

Although you might feel tempted to go for a rain dance. Doing so can lead to the trapping of pollutants and dirt in your skin and make you sick. In case you get wet in the rain, avoid long showers and take a hot water bath as soon as you are back home, avoid wearing the drenched clothes for long.

Binge on immunity-boosting fruits and fresh vegetables

It’s advisable to keep your gut happy during the monsoon to stay healthy. Therefore, avoid eating stale food as it might cause infection and make your stomach upset. Include fresh vegetables in your diet and eat protein-rich food, along with fibre and other nutrients. Make sure to wash the vegetables well and avoid eating raw foods as much as possible.

Eating vegetables like bitter gourd is part of some traditions in India, particularly during the rainy season. Bitter gourd has multiple health benefits, you should also include them in your meals.

Also, including fruits rich in Vitamin C like oranges, and sweet lemon in your diet is a healthy way to boost your immunity and fight infection. Fruits help individuals to maintain health and strength as they are rich, natural sources of vitamins and minerals.  You can also include fruits like pears, mangoes, apples, and pomegranate in your diet.

Eating outside during monsoon can be bad for your health as vegetables and water used to make the food might get exposed to constant humidity and can even be contaminated.

Street food or outside food is usually spicy and oily, leading to bloating, acidity and indigestion. There is also a high chance of infection due to unhygienic conditions if outside food is eaten during the monsoon as you can develop infection and allergies and get diseases like typhoid and cholera.

Use mosquito repellents and avoid stagnant water

Do not walk on pavements and roads filled with excess rainwater intentionally, as the stagnant water from the rain can cause severe diseases and infections. These are breeding grounds for mosquitoes and carriers of several life-threatening diseases such as malaria and dengue.

Throw away water from the inside of unused tanks, water coolers, and flower pots. It is important to keep water surfaces clean and dry to avoid diseases.

Also, use insect repellents, and mosquito nets, and wear full-sleeve clothes while going out, especially in the evening.
